Enable Alternate DNS

Alternate-DNS is an easy and foolproof way to block Internet ads and does not require installing any applications. It can be enabled seamlessly, absolutely free, easily set up on any device, and provides you with minimal necessary functions to block ads, counters, malicious websites, and adult content.

Your private data and privacy is critical. With Alternate-DNS, you and your sensitive data will be safe from any online tracker and analytics system that may attempt to steal your data while surfing the web.

There are two ways to use Alternate-DNS on your device depending on whether you would like to block ads on individual devices or across all the devices on the network. But in this article only the DNS method on router has been demonstrated as this method is platform independent.

Open the admin control panel for your router. Usually you can access it from your browser via a URL (like http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/) or this would be mentioned under the device itself. You may be asked to enter the password. If you don’t remember it, you can often reset the password by pressing a button on the router itself.

Find the DNS settings (Usually under WAN or DHCP settings).

Enter Alternate-DNS’ DNS server addresses there:

IPv4
For “Ad-free” servers:

•  Set your DNS to 23.253.163.53 & 198.101.242.72
•  or for ipv6 2001:4801:7825:103:be76:4eff:fe10:2e49 & 2001:4800:780e:510:a8cf:392e:ff04:8982

You should be able to enjoy Ad-free browsing once you have configured the DNS and rebooted the router.

Method 2: Enable Alternate-DNS On Device (Not preferred)

Mac OS X

1. Go to System Preferences.
2. Click on Network.
3. Select the first connection in your list and click Advanced.
4. Select the DNS tab and add … and … to the list of DNS servers.
5. Click OK

Windows

1. Right-click the bottom-leftmost corner of your screen to bring up WIN+X menu.
2. Click on Network Connections.
3. From the Network Connections screen, locate the network connection that you want to change the DNS servers for.
   Tip: In Windows 8, wired connections are usually labeled as Ethernet, while wireless ones are usually labeled as Wi-Fi.
4. Open the network connection you want to change the DNS servers for by double-clicking or double-tapping on its icon.
5. On the connection’s Status window that’s now open, tap or click on the Properties button.
6. On the connection’s Properties window that appeared, scroll down in the This connection uses the following items: list and click or tap Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to select it.
7. Tap or click the Properties button.
8. Choose the Use the following DNS server addresses: radio button at the bottom of the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window.
9. Enter the IP addresses … and … to the list of DNS servers.
10. Click OK.
